Brixton
Walk down Josephine Avenue or any of the streets off Acre Lane and look up: rows of Victorian stacks, most of them older than the tube line that made Brixton famous. Behind those pots are thousands of original fireplaces, and every year more of them are being opened up again as owners renovate and rediscover what a real fire brings to a room.
That is where we come in. A flue that has sat unused since the seventies needs more than a match and good intentions. It needs sweeping out, checking for nests and debris, and smoke testing to prove it draws safely before the first fire is lit. We do this work week in, week out, from grand villas on Brixton Hill to split-level conversions near Loughborough Junction.
We are the fifth generation of the same family doing this job, sweeping London chimneys since 1870, and the standards have never slipped: turn up on time, seal the fireplace, leave the room spotless and hand over an official NACS certificate before we go. The van comes up from our base in Coulsdon, and Brixton has been on the round for generations.
What We Do Here
Unblocking, sweeping and smoke testing fireplaces that have been out of service for years, so you know the flue is safe before the first fire is ever lit.
The full brush and vacuum sweep with a smoke test where required and your official NACS certificate. One honest price agreed on the phone before we come out. No hidden extras, ever.
Blocked flue? We clear bird nests safely and legally, fit guards to keep them out, and can run a camera up the flue when you need to see what is really going on inside.
Good To Know
Very often, yes, and it is one of our favourite jobs. We open the flue up, sweep out whatever the years have left behind, then run a smoke test to prove the chimney draws properly and is sound before you light anything. Many Brixton fireplaces were blocked off in the sixties and seventies and come back to life beautifully. If we find a problem, you will get a straight answer about what it needs, not a scare story.
Yes. A lot of Brixton's big Victorian houses are now flats, and each floor often has its own flue running up the shared stack. We sweep flues in conversions all the time. It helps to know which fireplace connects to which pot, and if nobody is sure, a smoke test or camera inspection will tell us. Freeholders and managing agents are welcome to book us for the whole building at once.
Give us a quick ring with a few details, what you burn, how many flues, whereabouts you are, and we will give you an honest price over the phone before we come out. The price we agree is the price you pay: no call-out charge on top and no surprises on the day. The job always includes sheets down, a sealed fireplace, the brush and vacuum sweep, a smoke test where required and your official NACS certificate.
No. Protecting your room is the first thing we do and the thing we are most fussy about. The fireplace is sealed before a brush goes anywhere near the flue, dust sheets cover the floor and hearth, and the vacuum captures soot as we work. Fresh paint and new carpets are safe with us. It is why so many of our customers come back year after year.
Brixton, like all of London, is a smoke control area, so open fires need authorised smokeless fuel, and wood may only be burned on an exempt appliance such as a Defra-approved stove, using dry, seasoned logs. Burning the right fuel keeps you legal, keeps the neighbours happy and keeps your flue far cleaner. We are always glad to advise on what suits your fireplace when we visit.
The whole postcode and beyond: central Brixton, Brixton Hill, Acre Lane, Coldharbour Lane, Josephine Avenue and the streets around Rush Common, plus Loughborough Junction, the Stockwell border and over towards Brockwell Park and Herne Hill. We have swept this part of south London for five generations, so wherever you are, the answer is almost certainly yes.
Also sweeping in Dulwich, Balham, Streatham, Tooting and across south London.
