Shirley

Our family's own neighbourhood

Every sweep has a patch they hold closest, and for us it is Shirley. Alan's mum still lives here, and this is where his dad lived and worked from for many years. He is sadly no longer with us, but the round he built is still ours, and looking after Shirley's locals the way he did matters to this family more than anywhere else we work.

It helps that Shirley is proper sweeping territory. The 1930s semis and detached houses off Wickham Road and up towards Shirley Hills were built with solid brick chimneys and generous fireplaces, and a great many still have them, whether that is an original open fire kept going or a wood burner fitted into the old opening. Down the road, Shirley Windmill is a reminder this was working countryside not so long ago.

Naish & Sons is the oldest established chimney sweep firm in London, sweeping since 1870 through five generations of the same family. In Shirley that heritage is personal: fireplaces swept cleanly, smoke tested where required, an official NACS certificate every time, and neighbours treated like neighbours, because that is exactly what they are.

Questions we hear in Shirley

How quickly can you get to Shirley?

Quickly. We are based in Coulsdon, a short drive away, and Shirley has been part of the family round for decades, so we are over this way all the time. Ring us on 0208 668 9914 and we will usually find you a slot that suits within days, often sooner outside the autumn rush.

Our 1930s house still has its original fireplace. Is it safe to use?

Very likely, once it has been swept and tested. Shirley's interwar houses were built with good honest brick chimneys, and most are still sound. The right first step after years of disuse is a full sweep followed by a smoke test, which shows whether the flue draws properly and is free of leaks. If anything needs attention we will tell you plainly, and if it is all clear you can light up with confidence.

We are thinking about a log burner. Where do we start?

Start with the chimney, not the showroom. A sweep and a camera inspection tell you the condition of the flue before you commit to an installation, and the findings shape what liner and appliance make sense. It is a small cost that can save a much bigger one, and it means no nasty surprises once the installer arrives. We are happy to advise while we are there.

My mum is elderly. Will you look after her place properly?

Yes, and we understand the question better than most, because our own family lives in Shirley. We are patient, we explain what we are doing, we protect the room completely and we leave everything exactly as we found it. Plenty of our longest-standing customers are older residents whose chimneys we have swept for years, and their trust is something we take personally.

What happens if you find a problem in the flue?

You get the truth, in plain English. We will show you what we have found, explain what it means and set out your options, whether that is a repair, a liner, a bird guard or simply keeping an eye on it. No scare tactics and no pressure. After 150 years in the trade, our name is worth more to us than any single job.

Do you cover Monks Orchard, Spring Park and Shirley Oaks?

Yes, all of them, along with the streets off Wickham Road and Shirley Road, the Shrublands estate and out towards Addington and the West Wickham border. If you are anywhere in CR0 or just beyond it, give us a call. We have swept this corner of south London across five generations, since 1870.

Also sweeping in Croydon, Streatham, Dulwich, Balham and across south London.
