Few corners of London have kept their chimneys the way Dulwich has. The Georgian houses along College Road and through the Village, the Victorian terraces either side of Lordship Lane, the Edwardian semis around Dulwich Park: their stacks are part of what makes these streets special, and a remarkable number of the fireplaces beneath them still work for a living.
Dulwich holds a very special place in our heart. It is where we do most of our work, and all five generations of the Naish family have worked these streets in their time, from the horse-drawn cart days to the van you see today. Naish & Sons is the oldest established chimney sweep firm in London, sweeping since 1870, and older chimneys hold no surprises for us. Wide Victorian flues collect soot and tar faster than people expect, and a fireplace that gets real use through winter needs a regular sweep to stay safe, draw properly and keep smoke out of the room.
Every visit is the full job: fireplace sealed, sheets down, vacuum running, and an official NACS certificate in your hand when we leave. Dulwich, like the rest of London, sits in a smoke control area, so we are always happy to advise on the right fuels to burn while we are with you.

Yes, and we enjoy them. The Georgian and early Victorian houses around the Village and College Road have some of the finest chimneys in south London, and age is no obstacle to a proper sweep. We work carefully, protect the room completely and treat original fireplaces with the respect they deserve. If a flue turns out to need attention beyond a sweep, we will tell you honestly and explain your options.
If you burn wood on it, quarterly while the fire is in use. House coal calls for twice a year and smokeless fuel at least once a year. Older flues are often more generous in size, which means more surface for soot and tar to cling to, so regular sweeping matters even more than in a modern flue. If you tell us what you burn and how often, we will give you an honest schedule rather than a hard sell.
Keep an eye on them. Jackdaws favour tall, older stacks and can fill a flue with an astonishing volume of twigs in a couple of weeks. Once birds are sitting on eggs the nest is protected by law until they have finished, roughly March to August, so the time to act is either before they settle or after they leave. We clear nests safely and can fit a bird guard so you are not repeating the exercise next year.
Yes. Every sweep we carry out comes with an official NACS certificate, which is the document insurers recognise. If you ever needed to make a claim involving the chimney, that certificate is your proof the flue was professionally maintained. We are members of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps and have been sweeping this part of London for over 150 years.
That is exactly the right order to do things in. We can sweep the flue and carry out a CCTV inspection so you can see its true condition from the inside before any installation work begins. It shows up cracks, blockages and anything else an installer needs to know about, and it can save you real money by catching problems early.
